PEGRAM, TN (WSMV) -

A Cheatham County inmate who left a work detail Saturday afternoon has surrendered to authorities, police said.

According to investigators, Zachary Burgess surrendered Wednesday night around 6 p.m.

Police said Burgess was helping load trailers at the Cheatham County landfill on Sam's Creek Road in Pegram around 2 p.m. Saturday when he escaped.

Burgess may have gotten into a white SUV, according to officials.

He now faces a charge of jail escape, according to Cheatham County Sheriff John Holder.

Investigators are still trying to determine who might have helped Burgess escape, Holder said.
