Vanderbilt offers youth sports safety clinic - WSMV Channel 4

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - With high school sports ramping up across the state, the emergency department at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University has already seen a significant increase in cases of concussions, heat exhaustion and other injuries.
The hospital is offering a free youth sports safety clinic on Wednesday at St. Matthew School in Franklin. The clinic will be taught by doctors and safety experts who will cover topics such as overuse and acute injuries, hydration, heat-related injury, concussion and proper safety equipment.
Alex Diamond, medical director of the Program for Injury Prevention in Youth Sports at the hospital, said in a news release about 9% of children who are injured each year quit playing sports altogether.
The hospital also provides baseline pre-concussion testing for young athletes.
