MIAMI (WSVN/CNN) - Employees at American Airlines are going
through turbulent times as the carrier attempts to emerge from bankruptcy, lay
off some 4,000 employees, and cancel dozens of flights each day.
Warning letters were sent to thousands of American Airlines
employees Tuesday. The company said they do not have final layoff numbers, but
47 employees at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport could lose
their jobs.
About 158 employees at Miami International Airport could
lose their jobs on Nov. 16 and 1,209 could follow on Dec. 16.
Miami International Airport is a major hub for American.
American tried to pull out of chapter 11 bankruptcy protection,
dropping $1 billion in labor costs in the process. The airline has also been
working to renegotiate union contracts, including a judge-approved pay cut for
pilots earlier this month.
The airline has also continued merger talks with US Airways.
