NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A Metro employee is off the job and facing charges after allegedly hitting two people on a motorcycle.
Police said Robert Musick was under the influence when he crashed a city truck into a motorcyclist and his passenger Monday on the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge. The two on the motorcycle ended up in the hospital, Musick ended up behind bars and it's the taxpayers who will likely end up footing the bill.
Musick has worked since 2005 with an overnight crew to clean up downtown, and at the time of the crash Musick was on city time.
That means Nashville taxpayers will end up paying for any damage, lawsuits and hospital bills.
Witnesses said it looked like Musick fell asleep behind the wheel. Officers reported he failed field sobriety tests, acted nervous and fidgety and had slurred speech and blood shot eyes.
But, Metro Public Works officials had different observations. They always conduct their own investigations when a city employee is involved in an on-the-job wreck, and they said Musick passed.
Musick is suspended with pay pending an investigation. And while Public Works officials said they are taking the situation very seriously, they don't want to jump to any conclusions while they await test results.
Police charged Musick with driving under the influence, and the driver of the motorcycle, who didn't want to be identified, said he has hired a lawyer.
