Clarksville RV carbon monoxide victims to be honored

Posted: Updated:
CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Community members will gather today to honor the five members of the Bikers Who Care group who died one year ago of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The two women and three men died during a charity event at the Clarksville Speedway when their RV filled with carbon monoxide.

Three events are set for Tuesday in memory of the five victims: Jon and Katy Over, Tim Stone, Jim Wall and Allison Bagwell-Wyatt.

  • At 1 p.m. at West Creek Middle School, state lawmakers will declare Sept. 18 as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Day.
  • At 3 p.m. at West Creek Middle School, a plaque will be unveiled honoring Katy Over who was a former teacher at the school.
  • At 6:30 p.m. at the Clarksville Speedway, a public ceremony will include remarks by state Sen. Tim Barnes and Rep. Joe Pitts.

The public is invited to attend.

The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance has several tips for preventing carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • Only use barbecue grills outside, away from all doors, windows, vents and other shelter openings. Lit or smoldering barbecue grills should never be taken inside a home, tent or RV.
  • Never use a fuel-powered lantern or portable camping stove inside a home, tent or camper/RV.
  • Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors, windows, vents and other building openings to prevent exhaust fumes from entering the home.
  • Install and maintain CO alarms inside homes, campers and RVs to provide early warning of carbon monoxide.
