Fire at Nashville residence hotel displaces several families

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

An electrical fire forced guests out of a downtown Nashville hotel Monday evening.

The Stadium Inn, on Interstate Drive, is a residence hotel, and most of the guests rent by the week.

Now, many of them who lived on the second and third floors are going to have to stay somewhere else after smoke filled the second and third floors of the six-story building.

Nashville firefighters said they found an electrical box on fire.

"Had some water, I believe, from a bathtub that overflowed into the electrical part of the second floor," said Assistant Fire Chief Steve Holt.

Firefighters turned off the power to the two floors involved then ventilated the smoke.

Rochelle Jack lives with her family on the third floor.

"It's pretty bad. When we were walking down the stairs you could smell the smoke. It was a really strong smell," Jack said.

She said her family had just paid their weekly rent, and now they don't know if their belongings were damaged or where they will end up.

"My mom just got out of the hospital from having triple hernia surgery, and she has a big cut down the middle of her stomach. So this is a big stress on her," Jack said.

Officials estimate about 80 to 90 people were displaced by the fire.
