Memphis officer charged with sex trafficking

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Federal authorities have charged a Memphis police officer with sex trafficking, saying he made a deal while on duty to take prostitutes from the city to work at a party in Tunica, MS.

An FBI affidavit filed Monday said 30-year-old Sean McWhirter took two women to a Tunica hotel room, where he was arrested Sunday night. It said McWhirter was at work in his patrol car three days earlier when he told a cooperating source he could arrange for women to attend the party and be paid for sex.

The affidavit said one of the women told authorities McWhirter took her to Tunica to strip and engage in prostitution.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said his department helped in the case and will do what is necessary to remove lawbreakers from the department.
