Driver who hit church van had powder, say police

Posted: Updated:

Police are testing powder found on a young Seymour man after a fatal church van crash.

Members of a church youth group were returning to Cedar Grove Baptist Church from a religious retreat in Gatlinburg on Sunday when a sport utility vehicle struck their van head-on in Sevier County, causing it to roll.

Police said 45-year-old Jeffrey K. Trussell of Maryville and 16-year-old Courteney Kaliszewski of Seymour were killed. Eleven other people on the van were injured.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported 21-year-old Tyler James Schaeffer, who drove the SUV, was on probation for robberies in Knox and Blount counties.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Randy Martin said on Monday that a container of powder was found when Schaeffer was taken to a hospital for his injuries from the crash.
