A 69-year-old former NFL player who had been missing since Sunday afternoon has been found alive and unharmed.

Family members reported David Hathcock missing after he went for a walk Sunday at about 12:30 p.m. along Rolling Mill Road in Hermitage but never returned.

Dozens of officers worked throughout the night as teams searched the Brandywine subdivision both on the ground and in the air.

Rain made the search difficult for K-9s combing the area trying to pick up a scent, and the helicopter was forced to the ground.

Later, a team with the Office of Emergency Management continued the search by boat on Old Hickory Lake.

"I'm glad the Metro Police Department came out here. I mean, they were incredible. They were incredible - searched all through the night," said son Gary Hathcock.

Some of the officers involved in the search for Hathcock at one time watched him play football on the 1966 Green Bay Packers - the first team ever to win a Super Bowl.

By the light of day, friends also hit the pavement and braved the rain, hoping they would find David Hathcock. But police said a caller's tip led them to David Hathcock under a highway bridge at the intersection of Highway 109 and Highway 70 in Wilson County, nearly 20 miles from his Nashville home.

Family members said David Hathcock, who lives in the Brandywine Subdivision, has a heart condition. Detectives said when they asked David Hathcock why he was under the bridge, he answered that he got tired.

After he returned home, his family declined to speak on camera but told police they are thankful for everyone and just glad he's home safe.
