Grieving widow battles landlord while coping

PLEASANT VIEW, TN (WSMV) -

Every day has been a struggle for Dorene Smith and her family since her husband Mark Smith died on Labor Day weekend from a flipped over Jeep.

Mark Smith was off-roading in the Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky at the time of the accident.  Since then she and their three children have tried to pick up the pieces, rallying around one another.

Smith and her son took over Smith's truck repair company.  The couple's daughter, who watched her father die, dropped out of Middle Tennessee State University and moved back home to be with her mother.

Marissa Smith lived in the Raiders Ridge Apartments in Murfreesboro for five days before her father died.

She says she called management to notify them that she'd be moving out and wanted to know if she could get out of her lease.

The family's calls were ignored for two weeks until they said the owner finally returned their calls on Sunday after Channel 4 contacted the Murfreesboro complex.

A representative of the complex told the family on Sunday that they were contacting their office on Monday about the issue.

Marissa, an accounting major, plans to resume her studies at Nashville Community College in the spring.
