Preds could turn vacant Bellevue mall into ice rink

Posted: Updated:

Bellevue's vacant mall could see a second life as an ice hockey rink, as discussions continue between the Nashville Predators and city leaders.

Bellevue Center is one of a number of sites that the city and the Predators are eyeing as a possible location to build a community ice rink and practice center for the team.

"Part of our negotiations with the Predators, for them to stay in town, the new agreement, is for them to develop another practice rink in conjunction with the team," said Rich Riebeling, Metro's director of finance.

Riebeling said Bellevue has been floated as a possible location, but it's just one of many on the list.

"There's a lot of 'ifs' there. The mall property would have to be redeveloped first, so it's something we're going to look at. But it's far down the road. It's not something that's going to happen tomorrow," he said.

The mall was supposed to be redeveloped in 2008 with a new library, but there hasn't been any activity since that plan fell apart.
