Man charged in raping disabled woman in Wal-Mart

Posted: Updated:

Police said a woman with a disability was raped inside a Dickson Wal-Mart store, and her child was with her at the time.

The victim has cerebral palsy, and police said she was raped in broad daylight while she was shopping.

"She couldn't run due to her condition," said Dickson Police Cmdr. Eddie Breeden.

Justin Chandler is now accused in the unimaginable attack after police turned to Facebook, asking for the public's help identifying the suspect seen in surveillance images.

Chandler was then indicted by a Dickson County grand jury.

"Apparently there are people out there, as in this instance, that will take advantage of any situation," Breeden said.

According to court records, Chandler followed the victim through the store after he asked her a question about a toy for his niece. Then, he reportedly grabbed her from behind and sexually assaulted her.

"No one that was inside the store was in the aisle where this occurred. No one actually knew what was going on until he was already exiting the store," Breeden said.

A Wal-Mart spokesperson said as soon as they were made aware of what had happened that day inside their store, they immediately took the victim to a safe place and called police.

The victim in this case is doing as well as can be expected, considering what she went through.

And as for the man accused of sexually assaulting her, he is now out of jail on a $30,000 bond.

Channel 4 News called Chandler's attorney Friday for comment, but we have not heard back from him yet.

Chandler is scheduled to go to trial in November for that rape charge.
