Mother charged after baby born with drugs in system

Posted: Updated:

A mother is accused of child abuse after her baby girl was born prematurely and with illegal drugs in her system.

Investigators in Rutherford County arrested Emily Crum, 21, last month.

Her baby was born seven weeks prematurely and weighed 2 pounds, 13 oz. The baby also had drugs in her system.

Authorities said Crum took prescription pain medicine, smoked marijuana and smoked one to two packs of cigarettes per day while pregnant.

Her baby spent a month in the hospital and is now in foster care.

The father, whose identity police did not release, is wanted on charges in Kentucky.
