PEMBROKE, KY (WSMV) -

A commercial mowing employee has died after he was run over by a tractor on the right-of-way along a southern Kentucky highway last week.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Grady Givens, 40, of Fairview, TN, was part of a contract mowing crew working for the KTC along U.S. Highway 41 near Pembroke Sept. 12 when he either tripped or fell beneath a tractor as it drove past where he was talking to another employee of Double-G Mowing, based in Tennessee.

Givens was taken to a Hopkinsville, KY, hospital before being transferred to a Nashville hospital.

Givens died Monday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, according to the Kentucky New Era.

"The prayers and thoughts of Transportation Cabinet employees are with the Givens family and employees of Double-G Mowing. This is sad time for all of us. It serves as a reminder of the hazards our employees and the employees of contractors face each and every day as they go about their work maintaining highways across Kentucky," said KTC District 2 Chief Engineer Kevin McClearn, in a statement.

The KTC said it is still investigating the incident, which they said was first reported to the Christian County Sheriff's Department.
