Crime Stoppers: "Bucket List Bandit" strikes Chattanooga

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN. (WRCB) -- Chattanooga Police are part of the nationwide hunt for a serial bank robber. The FBI dubbed this man the "Bucket List Bandit", after he reportedly told a teller in June that he had only four months to live. He has hit 10 banks, so far, in 9 states from the west to the Atlantic coast to the southeast.

"He's somewhere between 45-55 years old," said Chattanooga Police Officer Daniel Jones. "He's a white male. He's got gold-rimmed glasses." The FBI wanted poster indicates he may be closer to 60, but there is no doubt he makes no attempt to disguise himself.

The pictures provided for this week's case are from the Gunbarrel Road BB&T bank. On Wednesday, August 8th, around 2:45PM, the "Bucket List Bandit" struck in Chattanooga; By that point his 6th known robbery in as many states. Federal agents have tied him to 4 more heists in the days since.

If he is truly living his final days, he may feel he has nothing to lose, which would explain how he calmly strolls into the bank and hands the teller a note from a binder. "Basically the note says, 'Don't hit the silent alarm. I have a gun and I need you to go get money and put it inside this envelope.'" explained Officer Jones. He has used the threat of a gun in other robberies, but according to the FBI, has yet to show one.

After Chattanooga, he apparently moved on to banks in Illinois, Missouri, and Pennsylvania. Back in June, at the beginning of his crime spree, he was seen in a black compact SUV which the bureau identified as being a Chevrolet Captiva, or similar model, with a silver roof rack. The day he hit Chattanooga, there were no pictures of his escape.

"We don't know whether he was in a vehicle. We don't know whether or not he was on a bicycle. We don't know," said Jones. "But, what we do know is somebody had to see this guy sometime during this event."

Take a good look at the pictures, especially if you were in the Gunbarrel Road area on the afternoon of August 8th. On that day, he wore a blue shirt and blue jeans. He is balding, though his hair appears a darker brown than in pictures from his earlier robberies. Anything you may remember seeing, no matter how inconsequential it may seem, could help lead local police and federal authorities him and get you paid.

Up to a thousand dollars cash is waiting for your good tip. Call Crime Stoppers: 698-3333. Remember, an officer may answer the telephone, but you will never have to reveal your identity.
