NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Nashville Mayor Karl Dean challenged citizens to walk or run for better health as he announced the second annual free 5K Wednesday.
The Mayor's Challenge 5K Walk/Run is set for Nov. 18 in downtown Nashville and will also include a kids' fun run.
"Making the Mayor's 5K an annual event continues Nashville's commitment to improve the lives of our residents by encouraging them to be physically active," Dean said.
More than 5,000 runners and walkers participated in the inaugural Mayor's 5K last November.
"The momentum we are building around healthy living is exciting to see, and I know Nashvillians are benefiting," Dean said.
Both the 5K and the kids' fun run will start and finish at Public Square in front of the Historic Metro Courthouse.
A free, eight-week training program begins Sept. 24 at the five Metro Parks regional community centers and the Centennial Sportsplex. Dean said it is designed to help prepare participants who have never walked or run 3.1 miles.
