Children's Services criticized for data delay

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Department of Children's Services is drawing criticism from a Democratic state lawmaker for its delay in sending data she requested over two months ago.

On July 3, Rep. Sherry Jones of Nashville told The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/QIuzCD) she requested the department to tell her how many children in state custody have died this year and how many deaths occurred among children for whom the agency has a case file.

The Tennessean requested the same information this week, but DCS was unable to provide any immediate answers.

Jones called the slow response "ridiculous."

DCS spokeswoman Molly Sudderth said Monday that the agency is continuing to work on gathering the information, but she did not specify when it would be available.
