TOMPKINSVILLE, KY (WSMV) -
The man accused of gunning down a former Kentucky police chief entered a plea of not guilty today in his first court appearance.
Herbert Proffitt was shot to death while walking to his mailbox earlier this month.
Police arrested Charles Hammer, a man Proffitt put behind bars in the late 1980s.
Investigators believe the shooting was a result of a feud that spanned decades.
Proffitt spent over 50 years in law enforcement, including several years as chief of the Tompkinsville Police Department. He also served as Monroe County Sheriff from 1970-73.
