CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A mother is facing aggravated child abuse and neglect charges after her 3-year-old son accidentally shot himself earlier this month.

The boy shot himself Sept. 8 at an apartment on Peachers Ridge Road.

Police believe the boy's 22-year-old mother, Lisa Evans, left her handgun unattended on a couch while the boy was eating at a table in a different room.

According to police, Evans was working on the computer when she heard the gunshot and found her son crying.

The child suffered a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen. His mother administered first aid and called 911, according to police.

As of Wednesday, the child is in stable condition and receiving physical therapy at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville.

Evans is being held on $5,000 bond.
