CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Police have arrested a man in connection with a shooting that injured two people in the parking lot of a daycare in Montgomery County Thursday morning.
The shooting occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the Kiddieland Day Nursery in the 200 block of Chapel Street.
When police arrived, they found a 25-year-old man, later identified as Travis Outlaw, in the middle of the street who was shot in the arm, hand and grazed in the head.
A 22-year-old woman, identified as Nakita Butler, was also found nearby shot in the hand. Police said Butler was dropping off two children at the daycare when she was shot.
Early Friday morning, police arrested Travis Lamont Skelton, 26, of Clarksville, and charged him with two counts of aggravated assault.
Police said Skelton was formerly in a relationship with Butler and the father of her two children. The altercation started out as a verbal argument, which turned physical between Outlaw and Skelton.
The scene with flashing blue lights, yellow crime tape and investigating officers was terrifying for parents and grandparents who arrived to pick up their children.
"Not just my children but all children, you know. My grandbabies are in there, so it's just really upsetting," Tina McLean said.
Nursery workers came outside after the shooting to aid the two victims, whose identities have not been released.
Before Skelton was arrested Friday morning, he fled the scene. The daycare went into lockdown, leaving neighbor Joshua Morrison demanding answers as to what started a shooting so close to so many innocent bystanders.
"Baby boy woke up screaming, my wife woke up. I woke up to gunshots," he said. "I just want the people that are responsible for it to come to justice. If I had a child in that daycare, I'd be hoping someone would step up and say something."
Both shooting victims were transported to area hospitals in stable condition.
