Man killed in Columbia home invasion

COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) -

One person was killed after a shooting near downtown Columbia early Wednesday morning.

Officers responded to a disturbance call in the 1500 block of Highland Avenue just before 4:30 a.m.

When officers arrived, they encountered two people, later identified as Prudence Spencer and Terrance Hill, who said a man, Thomas Moore, forced his way into Spencer's house.

Once inside the home, they said Moore began assaulting Hill and was then shot by Spencer in Hill's defense. Officers found Moore inside the residence dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

"Makes us all a little uneasy," said neighbor Keith Remer.

Hill was transported to Maury Regional Hospital for minor injuries received during the altercation. Spencer was not injured in the incident.

Police said all three people involved were not strangers, but investigators are still unsure of their relationship.

"These things are, of course, being investigated thoroughly. At this point, we have no information that would lead us to believe otherwise. Mr. Hill and Ms. Spencer are fully cooperating," said Columbia Police Lt. Jeremy Alsup.

Neighbors had good things to say about the woman police said pulled the trigger to defend her friend.

"She's really known for helping folks out and stuff, so it's a big shock right next door," Remer said.

And Moore's friends and family also had positive things to say. His past employer, who was on scene, said Moore wasn't the kind of guy to cause trouble.

No charges have been filed at this time. If you have any information on this case, call Columbia police.
