Election Commission to focus on electronic poll books controversy

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Members of the Davidson County Election Commission will meet today for the first time since last month's election and focus on the electronic poll books controversy.

Problems surfaced after the Aug. 2 election when advocates with Tennessee Citizen Action claimed the machine defaulted to a Republican ballot if a specific ballot was not selected or if poll workers did not ask voters which one they wanted.

The votes of high-profile public figures affected by this include Sheriff Daron Hall, Juvenile Court Clerk David Smith and State Sen. Joe Haynes, D-Nashville.

The election commission plans to use the electronic poll books in all Davidson County precincts in November, but Tennessee Citizen Action is requesting the use of the books be suspended.

An audit is planned for the August primary and the Davidson County Election Commission.

The commission meets Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Howard Office Building on 2nd Avenue South.
