NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Despite all the concerns and publicity about horse abuse, the annual Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration had big attendance.

Nearly 165,000 people attended the show in Bedford County, including several nights with crowds larger than last year's.

Organizers said there was a 7 percent attendance increase at the main weekend events.  About 1,500 horses competed for prize money this year.

The world grand champion "Walk Time Charlie" was crowned Saturday night.

Founded in 1939, The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration is an 11-day and night  event that awards $650,000 in prizes. Additional activities include a barn decorating contest, trade fair and dog show.

Organizers said the event has a $38 million impact on Middle Tennessee's economy.
