NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A mother critically injured while crossing the street in Madison late Friday is still fighting for her life.
Metro police believe Joanne Stauffer was walking with her 4-year-old daughter along Old Hickory Boulevard around 8:30 p.m. when the little girl broke free.
Police believe Stauffer ran after her and that's when a Dodge Stratus hit her.
Paramedics rushed Stauffer to Vanderbilt Hospital where at last check she was listed as critical but stable.
Her family contacted Channel 4 on Saturday. Wendy Lassiter doesn't believe her sister was at fault.
"They were saying that the street was not well lit. The street is very well lit. I don't see how they could miss them because the street is full of lights over there. There's stores there's a gas station. Yeah so I don't think it was my sister's fault," Lassiter said.
Lassiter says her sister has a long recovery ahead of her. She's on a ventilator, has several broken bones, bleeding on the brain and a cracked vertebrate.
No charges have been filed against the driver, Mark Hunt.
