LAFAYETTE, TN (WSMV) -
The police chief in Lafayette has resigned over allegations that he beat a prisoner who was handcuffed.
Chief Ray Amalfitano turned in his resignation effective immediately.
The beating allegations surfaced in March, but the chief denies it ever happened.
After a lengthy meeting with Lafayette Mayor Richard Driver, the two agreed it would be in the best interest of the city and the police department for Amalfitano to resign.
In his letter of resignation, the chief said resigning wasn't easy, but the charges made it difficult to perform his duties.
An interim chief will be appointed on Tuesday.
