NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A Metro police officer was honored for beating back cancer.
Officer Cindy Huffines was diagnosed in 2007 with colon cancer.
She was given the Theodore Roosevelt Association Police award on Thursday. As part of the award, her name will be inscribed on a plaque inside police headquarters.
Despite 25 radiation treatments and undergoing chemotherapy five times, she continued to work when she could.
She said being able to focus on something other than her condition helped her get through her ordeal.
"I did sit at a desk, but I had specific tasks, instead of just answering a phone," said Huffines. "I was given specific tasks which helped get me through the pain and not think about it, not dwell on it."
