Janitor injured in school blast in Carthage

CARTHAGE, TN (WSMV) -

A Smith County elementary school was evacuated after a small explosion inside the school.

A janitor at Union Heights Elementary, 663 Lebanon Hwy., was mixing chemicals in a toilet when it exploded. The janitor was transported by helicopter to a Nashville hospital.

Students at the school were evacuated, but will be returning to class. Smith County emergency personnel have determined the building is safe for teachers, students and parents.
