NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
An elderly woman died Wednesday after an accidental fall on an escalator at a Nashville grocery store.
Emergency crews were called to the Harris Teeter along Harding Pike around 3 p.m. after Martha Short, 83, apparently placed her shopping cart on the pedestrian escalator that leads from the store to the parking garage, and the cart tumbled on top of her, police said.
The pedestrian escalator runs parallel to a special ramp designed to transport grocery carts.
Short was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
In a statement, a company spokeswoman said:
"Harris Teeter deeply regrets the incident that took place at its Belle Meade store and would like to express its condolences to family and friends also affected. We work very hard to maintain a safe store environment for both our customers and our associates, and the news of what happened today is extremely upsetting."
