Vanderbilt Medical Center stressing healthy snacks

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Vanderbilt University Medical Center is putting healthier options in snack machines.

Kathy Gregory, who directs medical center retail operations and patient transportation, said the candy bars, chips and sodas will be reduced slowly, over a period of 2 years.

Gregory said the idea is to have healthier snacks available when visitors to the medical center or staff members go to the machines.

The retail operation is working with Five Star Vending, the machine vendor, and Coca-Cola, which supplies the drink machines. More vitamin water and zero-calorie beverages will be available.

The plan is to increase healthy vending options to 35% by the end of fiscal year 2013 and to 50% by the end of fiscal year 2014.
