East Hamilton starts county's first cardio-fitness class

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- It's the only class of its kind in Hamilton County, and one of few in the entire southeast.  The cardio fitness class at East Hamilton High is far removed from traditional physical education.

Senior Ron Allen said, "We ride bikes, we push ourselves, it's pretty intense, I'll tell you that much."

The school's health teachers, along with parents and local businesses, spent the past year accumulating the equipment and assembling the curriculum.  It's their way of keeping kids in shape today and preventing potential obesity in their future.

Teacher Holly Smith, who leads the drills, said "There are some activities you can't do after high school, it's hard to round up a football game. This gets them motivated and improves their cardiovascular fitness."

East Hamilton purchased spin bikes and mats, and also offers some out of the ordinary activities like zumba, pilates and yoga.  Parents are buying in too, calling it an investment in their childrens future.

Parent Brad Devaney said, "It shows up in how much better we sleep, how much better we eat, and it can improve test scores as well."

The class satisfies the school's PE requirement, but there's no room for slacking.  This is a constant motion, high energy, heavy perspiration way to get a credit.

Teacher Smith said, "I think they like it!  They get drained and sweaty, but kids like something different to get them in shape."

Many of them have seen their friends gain weight after leaving high school.  They hope to pick up some good habits from this class, and hope it spreads to other Hamilton County schools.
