A woman who was shot and killed at an apartment complex in south Nashville on Friday morning has been identified as a Tennessee correction officer who worked at Riverbend Prison.
Dalia Gutierrez-Sanchez, 43, died after she was approached by a man moments after she parked outside her building at Longwood Terrace Apartments on Wallace Road around 4:30 a.m.
Police believe there was an altercation when the man apparently tried to rob Gutierrez-Sanchez of her purse.
Witnesses said they heard several shots fired, and Gutierrez-Sanchez was later found nearby on a staircase.
"First, I was sleeping and I heard one shot. Then I heard another shot. Then I heard the other shot. Then at the end, there was a shot and I heard screaming, saying 'oh, my arm,'" said resident Daisy Nieto.
"My daughter, actually, she came out and she ran back in the house and she said, 'mommy, someone got shot.' And I'm like, 'oh, my God. Over here?' I'm thinking, you know, 'I'm from Detroit, and I'm trying to escape this,'" said resident Yolande Rolack.
Police said the gunman fled the apartment complex on foot and was last seen on Wallace Road. Detectives are still interviewing witnesses to obtain a detailed description of the shooter.
Anyone else with information on the gunman's identify is asked to call police at 862-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
