GOODLETTSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Many sports fans in Middle Tennessee are setting their sights on Pennsylvania these days, where the Goodlettsville Little League team won its third game at the World Series on Wednesday.
The team is now one win away from becoming the top squad in the country and earning a chance for the World Series title this weekend.
In baseball, it typically takes a team to get one safely to home plate. So while there is a lot of pride and joy in Goodlettsville about the team's success, it takes a lot of effort from many different people.
Jason Wright is one of those people. He helps keep things right at Moss Wright Park as head of the grounds crew.
"It's just good to see them playing so well and nice to know we had little something to do with it," he said.
Year-round, Wright and his team keeps up the field that has led to World Series dreams for the local 12 year olds. Think about it: one rock or one bad hop and the Goodlettsville kids may have lost a game and never made it to the World Series.
But this crew isn't looking for credit.
"No, it's all the kids. We just try to take care of it and give them a good safe place for them to play," said crew member Jack Presley.
Long retired from his own baseball days, Presley was in center field Thursday on the riding mower. But he is still forever linked to the green grass of Goodlettsville.
"I have real fond memories of playing ball out here in Goodlettsville," he said.
So, the crew is rooting hard, too, and still working to have fields ready for the upcoming fall season.
The Goodlettsville Little League team plays Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the U.S. Championship game against the winner of Thursday's game between Texas and California.
