A Shelbyville woman who was visiting a friend in Murfreesboro said she was kidnapped by three strangers who tried to rape her. She was able to get away from her attackers.
Mariah Ransom, 18 who lives in Shelbyville, is afraid to go back to Murfreesboro after what happened to her around 3:30 this morning.
"I was scared; I didn't know what else to do," Ransom said.
Ransom said she had asked a girl friend to wait outside for her while she walked to the Shell Gas Station on Greenland Drive. It was closed. While walking back towards Hanover Apartments she said a car full of men approached her.
"It was three dudes that told me to get in the car, and I told them no," Ransom said. "When I made it to where North Campus (Apartments) was, all three shoved me in there."
The frightened woman said the men took her to a nearby apartment, and tried to rape her.
"They told me to drop my clothes, and I told them I wasn't going to drop anything," she said.
Ransom said the would-be-rapists left her in the living room, that's when she made a run for it.
"I thought it was the end of my life," Ransom said. "I didn't think I would make it out.
After the 18-year-old got away, she ran to Old Lascassas Pike where another strange man approached her.
That stranger turned out to be a Good Samaritan.
"I asked him if I could use this phone, and he said yes," Ransom said. "He told me, you don't need to be out here at night, you're a young lady, and this is a bad neighborhood."
He took her back to his apartment where she called Murfreesboro police. Police are now urging women to take precautions, especially with students returning to Middle Tennessee State University this week. The alleged kidnapping happened right across the street.
"If you can't walk with a buddy at least carry a phone or let someone know where you're coming from and where you're going so they will be expecting you," Murfreesboro Police Sgt. Kyle Evans said. "It's a buddy system, a safety check if you will."
The men took Ransom's cell phone. If they are caught they will be charged with kidnapping, attempted rape and theft.
The woman told police she was only able to get a good look at one of the men. She described him as a tall black male with a lazy eye. His hair was in dreadlocks.
