NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
School hasn't yet started at Belmont University, but the school has already put its freshman class to work giving back to Nashville.
The class of 2016 took part in Belmont's annual SERVE project Monday, which has been a school tradition for more than a decade in which the freshman class spends a day volunteering across the city.
The service projects took students to Adventure Science Center, Cheekwood Gardens and Feed the Children. They delivered food, painted fences, removed graffiti and more.
Belmont officials said it's important their students start off the year by giving back to Nashville.
"We want them to understand that our commitment is not just to service, in and of itself, but service in our local community here in Nashville. We're very proud of the fact that we're located in Nashville, TN, and we want our students to become a part of the community. And that means making it better," said Associate Dean of Students Dr. Becky Spurlock.
More than 1,800 Belmont students volunteered across 32 different Nashville locations Monday.
