Budget woes have Sumner commissioners meeting tonight

GALLATIN, TN (WSMV) -

Some Sumner County teacher positions may be in jeopardy as commissioners continue to look for cuts in the budget.

The school board said it needs the extra money or else they could be looking at handing out pink slips.

The county commission is scheduled to meet Monday night to decide whether it will be able to give schools any additional money.

The school board said it needs $1.9 million for its budget.

Without the money, the school board said it will be faced with laying off teachers at the District's 45 schools.

Schools were back in session Thursday in Sumner County, a week-and-a-half behind schedule.

Board members said they didn't want to start the school year without being fully funded, so they delayed the start of school.

But the budget issues have not been resolved, and now the board may be faced with making cuts several days into the school year, depending on what commissioners decide Monday night.

The school board meets Tuesday night to discuss where cuts will be made. They'll also discuss how students will make up the eight school days missed over the last two weeks.
