Family and friends are trying to make sense of an almost unbelievable event at a visitation in a tiny Middle Tennessee town.
While a woman was receiving visitors to pay respects for her deceased mom, the daughter died at her mother's visitation of a massive heart attack.
The story is so tragic, yet at the same time it is a story of love and devotion. Hesse Hicks lived 98 years. By all accounts, she was an amazing woman who set a tone of service and love for her entire family.
"She knew what she wanted and needed, and she did it day in and day out and never complained. My mother was the same way," said Glen Ledbetter.
So, it made sense that when Hicks started to fade two years ago, her daughter, Brenda Ledbetter, would drop everything and devote every moment to her mom's comfort and joy.
"She wouldn't leave her side, 24/7. When Granny was asleep and resting, my mother would sit beside her, holding her hand. Many times I heard her tell people she was going to spend every second with her mom," Glen Ledbetter said.
And so she did. When her mom died in Algood on Tuesday night, Brenda Ledbetter was still holding her hand.
But Brenda Ledbetter was 78 herself, and at the visitation Wednesday, she collapsed and died in the chapel, giving in to her poor health only after finishing the care of her mom.
"We were all very concerned about mom. Family and friends and even down to the teller at the bank would always say, 'She looks bad, she looks tired.' Of course, we never dreamed that it would be to the extent that it was," Glen Ledbetter said. "I'm sad she passed away, but I'm glad she's with my grandma. That's the only saving grace."
Visitation for Hicks and Brenda Ledbetter was Thursday night in Algood.
Glen Ledbetter had one request. He said he would like everyone who sees this story to call his or her own momma tonight, and we are honored to pass that along.
