The Undocubus rolls into Nashville

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A bus tour like none other seems to be sparking a new chapter in the immigration debate Thursday night.

The Undocubus stopped in Nashville, and with it came dozens of illegal immigrants.

Immigration has been a hot topic for a while, but Thursday, as the "No Papers, No Fear" bus tour rolled into Nashville, we heard a unique perspective - those who are illegal and proud of it.

In the middle of downtown this afternoon, a message for the nation brought attention to the small group gathered along Church Street who live in America illegally.

"To all the people who want to put blocks in our way, I want to tell them that I am here and we are human beings and we deserve liberty," said Maria Cruz, an illegal immigrant from the protest, in Spanish.

The Undocubus is carrying a group of about three dozen illegal immigrants celebrating their status and calling for comprehensive reform.

"It makes me a little sad to know that there are people out there who are showing hate against our dreamers, against people like me," said Cruz.

The group received a warm welcome from Gail Seavey, who pastors the First Unitarian Universalistic Church in Green Hills.

"The word that's out there, for instance, is illegal alien," said Seavey. "It's like somebody from outer space. We name people in ways that they are no longer people and it drives fear in people's hearts."

To try and change that, the group set out on its bus trip weeks ago. Here in Nashville and as it turns towards the southwest, the group plans to advance the conversation about what it means to be an American.

"They are ushering in a new epoch," said Megan Macareg, from Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights. "And I think the question for us is, 'Are we going to end up having been on the right side of history or the wrong side of history?'"

The Undocubus and those on board will hold a rally near the Super Mercado on Nolensville Pike on Thursday night.
