Truck driver jailed as police investigate I-65 road rage

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

What should have been a typical drive home from work turned into a nightmare for one woman.

She said she feared for her life when a truck driver kept crashing into her car, in what police are investigating as a serious case of road rage.

The woman said, at first, she thought maybe it was an accident, but when the truck slammed into her car four times, she believed she was in danger.

"I was screaming, scared to death," said alleged victim Kim Monds. "He was angry, and he was going to take my life."

Monds said she is in physical and emotional pain, even afraid to drive now, after the alleged incident on the way home from work Tuesday.

"All I keep seeing is the grill on that truck. It's a nightmare," she said.

Monds was driving southbound on Interstate 65 near McEwen Drive in Franklin, trying to merge in front of an 18-wheeler along with two other cars.

"Everyone had their blinkers on," Monds said.

When she got in front of the tractor-trailer, Monds said the truck driver suddenly rear-ended her not once, but four times, before speeding away.

"My car went about 3 or 4 feet. Then I looked in rearview mirror, and he was another 20 feet behind me. And I saw him ram it up against me, and he did it four times," Monds said.

In a state of shock, Monds and a couple of witnesses called police while she tried to follow the truck for another 15 miles down the interstate.

"I did not want him getting away with it," Monds said.

State troopers caught up with the truck driver, Carl Nelson, in Spring Hill and charged him with leaving the scene of a crash, failure to exercise due care, plus possession of drugs and paraphernalia.

"And if I had him in front of me, to truly be honest, the words aren't appropriate for Channel 4," Monds said.

Nelson works for Watkins Trucking out of Birmingham, AL, and he remained jailed Wednesday.

When reached for comment, a person answering the phone at the trucking company hung up the phone both times.
