Officials have released disturbing new information about a 15-year-old boy accused of bludgeoning his mother to death early Saturday.
Authorities identified the victim as Melanie Davis, 46, and the Channel 4 I-Team has learned her son had no prior history of problems with police or his school.
The teen is being held at a juvenile detention center in Sumner County. While authorities have not released his name yet because of his age, the I-Team has learned the Sumner County district attorney will push to have him tried as an adult.
Sumner County Sheriff Sonny Weatherford describes the teen as scary and cold-hearted. In fact, the sheriff said Monday that not only was the teen smiling as he was questioned by detectives, he also told investigators he was even smiling as he bludgeoned his mother to death with a blunt object at their home.
The I-Team obtained a copy of the 911 call placed by a neighbor of the family in their upscale neighborhood near Hendersonville:
Dispatcher: "You need police, fire or medical?" Neighbor: "I need both. The neighbor came across the street saying his mom is dead in the bed and it looks like a fire in the game room."
Davis was a single widow and mother of two teenage boys. Weatherford said Davis' 15-year-old son confessed to beating his mother to death, and investigators said the teen then tried to set his house on fire with his 16-year-old brother still asleep inside. But, the older brother managed to get out and run for help.
The neighbor he ran to describes that moment in the 911 call from Gannett Road.
Dispatcher: "Now is she for sure dead? Or do they think that?" Neighbor: "I don't know. I'm not going in the house until someone gets here. The 16-year-old son come running across the street crying and the alarm is going off in the house."
Investigators later tracked the 15-year-old's cell phone to Belvedere Drive. Then, a deputy spotted the teen walking on Nichols Lane in Gallatin, some seven miles away from the crime scene. The sheriff said the teen has shown no remorse and hasn't said why he did it.
Both the 15-year-old and his older brother were students at Station Camp High School in Gallatin. School officials said they had no problems with the 15-year-old boy. In fact, he was described as just a typical teenager.
The teen will go before a juvenile judge Tuesday afternoon.
The Melanie Davis memorial fund has been set up at Sumner Bank & Trust. Donations can be made at branches in Hendersonville and Gallatin. Money raised will go toward Davis' 16-year-old son.
