LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - An undetermined number of people nationwide who bought a Skechers shoe hoping it would help them lose weight and tone muscles could get up to double the purchase price, or about $80 per pair, in a settlement.
Preliminary approval in the $40 million settlement was reached Monday in U.S. District Court in Louisville.
The agreement comes three months after Manhattan Beach, Calif.-based Skechers reached a deal with the Federal Trade Commission over the advertisements for the Shape-Ups and Resistance Runner shoes.
Skechers used celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Brooke Burke in ads, saying the shoes help people lose weight and strengthen their butt, leg and stomach muscles.
Under the agreement, consumers in 44 states and the District of Columbia would get up to double the purchase price of the shoes, or a maximum of about $80.
