Fire at Land Between the Lakes under control

Posted: Updated:

KUTTAWA, Ky. (AP) - The U.S. Forestry Service said a weekend wildfire at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area has been contained.

LBL Forest Service spokeswoman Jan Bush told The Paducah Sun that firefighters remained on patrol Sunday to monitor for any embers that might spread, but the main blaze had been extinguished.

Officials believe the fire began when a hay cutter hit a rock, and the flames spread quickly due to dry conditions. About 35 volunteer firefighters helped U.S. Forestry Service crews fight the blaze that burned about 250 acres.

Kuttawa Fire Department Chief Bill Compton said hot spots will probably continue to burn for days without a steady rain.

Some trails in the affected areas remain closed.
