HENDERSONVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A 15-year-old is in custody, accused of murdering his mother at their home in Hendersonville early Saturday morning and attempting to set the home on fire to cover up the crime.
Police were called to a home in the Creekside subdivision shortly after midnight.
When officers arrived on the scene on Gannett Road, the house was on fire.
Police say the teen used a blunt object to bludgeon his mother to death, and then intentionally tried to burn the house down.
Police say the woman's other 16-year-old son was asleep, but woke up because of the smoke detector. The 16-year-old found his mother was and said she was "bloodied" inside. She was later pronounced dead. The 16-year-old is not believed to be involved in the murder.
Police say that the 15-year-old then went to a Thorton's gas station on Belvedere Drive in Gallatin. He threw his cell phone in a field, but police were able to track the GPS on the phone, and located the 15-year-old on nearby Browns Street. He was arrested around 6 a.m. Saturday morning.
The Sheriff of Sumner County says the 15-year-old has been planning this for a while now, and that the 15-year-old was smiling through much of his confession. Police still aren't sure why he did it, because he has no history of violence.
The mother was a single parent living with her two boys.
