Leak at Watts Bar causes minor evacuation

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A leak at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant in East Tennessee caused the Tennessee Valley Authority to evacuate a part of the plant, but workers were allowed to return on Friday afternoon.

Travis Brickey, a spokesman for TVA, told WBIR-TV that a leak of a mixture of ammonia and water happened just before 9 a.m. in the turbine building at the plant near Spring City.

Brickey said they had to file a notice of an unusual event, which is the least serious classification. There were no injuries and there was no threat to public safety. The area was vented and cleaned up and TVA is investigating the cause of the leak.

The notice was lifted just before 1:30 p.m.
