Police take down "occupy" camp in Memphis

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis Police have dismantled the Occupy Memphis encampment.

WMC-TV reported officers moved in around 4 a.m. Friday to take down the tents on Civic Center Plaza. The station reported Police Director Toney Armstrong was there as the camp came down.

City Chief Administrative Officer George Little told reporters the tents had basically become a homeless camp. Little said city administration will "embrace freedoms of expression," but said camping on the plaza is over.

Some member of the occupy movement set up camp in October of last year.
