Greg JohnsonPIKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - An investigative report from the state comptroller's office shows the mayor of Pikeville cost the town more than $250,000 because of fraud, waste and abuse.
Greg Johnson was charged last month with official misconduct and felony theft over $60,000 after an investigation into city finances by the Tennessee comptroller of the treasury.
The charges include Johnson purchasing 10 "salvaged" automobiles for about $109,900 from an Alabama car dealership. Prosecutors have said the cars were brought to Pikeville but apparently never titled to the city and there's no indication they were ever used for town business.
The official misconduct charge carries a penalty of up to two years in prison, and Johnson faces as many as 12 years on the other.
