Some say new Lebanon HS causing traffic headaches

LEBANON, TN (WSMV) -

People have been raving about the beautiful new Lebanon High School, but there have been some flaws after school lets out for the day.

No one anticipated such heavy traffic while planning for the new $50 million school. The 365,000-square-foot building has been inundated with traffic challenges since the first day of classes last week.

"Terrible, terrible headache. It has to be some of the worst I've ever seen," said parent Jeannie Lavalley.

"The school is ginormous, and the parking lot is ginormous, but I have faith in the administration," said parent Larry Meadors.

David Burton, Director of Safety for Wilson County Schools, said the new campus was designed so there would be one way in and one way out for safety reasons. The old campus was wide open, so anyone could come and go from all directions. But Burton said these are growing pains, and things will get better.

"We hope everyone understands and has a little patience with us as we try to make adjustments trying to get the parents and the students and staff on campus and off campus safely," Burton said. "Our No. 1 priority is safety. The No. 2 priority is parents who are bringing their children to school, to get them on and off campus so they can get to work on time. We understand it's a burden, and we are certainly doing everything to resolve that. And it will be resolved."

School officials said they are working on a traffic study that will hopefully help alleviate some of the chaos in the end.
