CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Police in Crossville say someone has been passing off hundreds of fake $10 and $20 bills at local businesses and yard sales.
Detective William Padget tells WATE-TV that the problem is so rampant in the city that officials have discovered about $5,000 worth of the fake bills in circulation in the area.
He said at least 23 banks and businesses have been hit with the counterfeit bills, and they even found the fake money at a recent community yard sale.
Misty Chestnut, a manager at a local Sonic drive-in that has found the fake money, said car hops are now checking the bills while at the customers' cars. Crossville detectives say they have three suspects, but no arrests have been made.
