Candle vigil to honor Smyrna kids

SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) -

Dozens of people gathered outside a home on Old Nashville Highway in Smyrna, Saturday night.

Daniel, 3, and his 2-year old sister, Savanna, died from the heat Thursday, when they were left in a car. Family members tell us many of the people who came to the vigil were strangers, but they all shared one purpose, to show their support.

The family's taking comfort in the memories, and asking for prayers.

Elizabeth Polk, a family member, said, "Savanna always had the brightest smile. She was so shy, and Daniel was full of life and they loved each other."

Tiffany Finnigan, who is also a family member, said, "We saw what the community was doing by putting stuff out here and if anything, it brought us together more, and we just wanted to show the community that we are here and family does care. We're standing our ground and we're thankful that people understand."

The children's mother, Samantha Harper, has been charged with especially aggravated child abuse. The family is standing by her, telling us she loved her children.

Police say they are still investigating.
