ESTILL SPRINGS, TN (WSMV) -

A father and son breakfast turned into a tragedy Friday morning when the 16-year-old never made it.

Jay Sisk was preparing for his sophomore year of high school, but a terrible crash changed everything.

Family members said Jay Sisk was a special soul. They point to the last few years of his life, which he spent caring for his dying mother, Barbara Lynn.

She died in February, and her son was just looking forward to his new year at Franklin County High School when the unthinkable happened.

The crash occurred around 7 a.m. along Highway 41A in Estill Springs.

"We're still trying to piece together everything. We're in the first stages of putting this together," said Estill Springs Police Chief Allen Rhodes.

Just around the corner from the wreck Friday, family members were still in shock, missing Jay Sisk and also piecing together what they believe happened.

According to his family, Jay Sisk was driving northbound near Johnson Street after he had just finished dropping off a friend to work.

The teenager had been excited about his new Tennessee drivers license and was only a few miles away from the meat-and-three where he planned to meet his dad for breakfast when he collided with a truck and died.

"Jay was a sweet, individual 16-year-old boy," said his aunt, Sue Sisk. "Not like other 16 year olds. He was caring and concerned about everybody."

In all, three vehicles were involved in the wreck. Two other people sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Waitresses at Samples Restaurant said Jay Sisk and his dad, Ovie, were frequent and well-liked breakfast guests. The two would always sit at the same table, the one closest to the door, and Jay Sisk's order was always the same.

"He always ordered chocolate chip pancakes," said waitress Jill Judge.

This was shaping up to be the end of an adventurous summer for Jay Sisk, and his family is now left to wonder what could've been in a life cut too short.

"He will be missed by a lot of people. It will be hard for his dad to adjust," Sue Sisk said.

A visitation for Jay Sisk is set for Sunday from 5-9 p.m. at the Moore Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester. His funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m.
