Parents advised to take inventory before buying school supplies

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A family and consumer specialist with the University of Tennessee Extension suggests a careful inventory before doing back-to-school shopping.

Dr. Ann Berry says parents should evaluate what is needed now and what can wait. She urges parents to compile supply lists and also go through closets.

Berry also says it's a good time for parents to teach children money management and consumer skills. But children should not be burdened with a family economic crisis, and parents should not stress out in the presence of their children.

Meanwhile, Tennessee's "tax free weekend" is Friday through Sunday with tax breaks on school and art supplies, clothing and computers.
